“I don’t let my mouth say nothin’ my head can’t stand.” …… Louis Armstrong

Julius Fast wrote a book entitled, Body Language in 1970. He talked about a new science called Kinesics. It opened the way to more studies and books on the subjects. Today, the term Body Language is very common and understood as an important element of communication.

In fact, experts in the field of communication suggest that there is a rule that says that 7% of the meaning of what a person is saying comes from their words.

Interestingly, 38% is based on the tone of their voice. 55% of the meaning comes from the body language of the person that is speaking. This rule comes from research that was published in the late 1960’s.

Some now think that the percentages from this research might be slightly different. Nevertheless, the bottom line is still the same. If you don’t know the basics of body language, you are missing a valuable tool for learning how to communicate better. We speak body language on a subliminal level, without actually realizing that we are communicating through body talk.

1. Face
The face has around 90 muscles in it, with about 30 of these purely for expressing emotion. It can thus be used to send many non-verbal signals, using its various features in concert. When you enter a room if you feel nervous, your expression might make you look aloof or unfriendly.

Smiling at the room is a sure-fire way to remove anyone’s doubts about your approachability. Smiling makes us look warm, open and confident. Smiling is also a sign of submission as the person effectively says ‘I am nice and not a threat’.

2. Eyes
They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. They certainly give people clues about what we are feeling.
A softening of the eyes, with relaxing of muscles around the eye and a slight defocusing as the person tries to take in the whole person is sometimes called doe eyes. The eyes may also appear shiny.

Looking at something shows an interest in it, whether it is a painting, a table or a person. When looking at a person normally, the gaze is usually at eye level or above. The gaze can also be a defocused looking at the general person.

3. Hands
After the face, hands probably the richest source of body language. It is also worth noting that gestures with the hands vary significantly across cultures and an ‘innocent’ hand signal can get you arrested in another country.

Have you ever watched someone’s hand gestures when they are talking? Open hand gestures tend to make a person appear open and honest. Bringing hands together to a point can accent the point you are making.

Wringing your hands or excessively moving your fingers and hands will give away nervousness. It can even make someone look dishonest- are they trying to hide something?

4. Posture
If you lean towards someone you are showing an interest in that person. If we are feeling low in confidence, we tend to slouch our shoulders and look down.

Men and women use different body language. For instance, women will stand close to each other, hold eye contact with the person they are talking to and use gestures.

Men make little effort to maintain eye contact and don’t rely on the use of gestures to communicate. Men and women can learn how to communicate better by observing the differences in their use of body language.

GANNETT NEWS

Last year may go down as the best year yet for female CEOs of large companies, but those corporate chiefs want to make it clear their success has nothing to do with chromosomes.

“Good leadership is about the person and has little to do with gender,” says Carol Meyrowitz, 55, CEO of retailer TJX Cos., whose stock soared 79 percent in 2009. “Good leadership and good performance [are] not about any one thing, but a host of factors and circumstances.”

Still, the year after Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin fell just short of becoming the first female president or vice president, and heading into 2010, when women will begin outnumbering men in the work force, stocks of the 13 Fortune 500 companies that had a woman at the helm for all of 2009 were up an average 50 percent.

That’s a significant outperformance. The S&P 500 is up 25 percent.

Others with an up year:

• Brenda Barnes, 56, of Downers Grove-based Sara Lee, up 27 percent.

• Andrea Jung, 51, has been at Avon Products a decade, making her the longest-tenured of the 15. Avon stock rose 34 percent in 2009.

• Ellen Kullman, 53, has had an impressive debut since taking over at DuPont on Jan. 1, 2009. DuPont stock is up 34 percent.

• Carol Bartz, 61, the former Autodesk CEO who took over at Yahoo two weeks into 2009 for co-founder Jerry Yang, also ended the year with a gain — Yahoo is up 38 percent since Jan. 13.

There now are a record 15 Fortune 500 companies with a female CEO, seven of them megacorporations in the largest 100 as measured by annual revenue.

Women CEOs of giant firms remain too small a sample size to draw any conclusions, and it would be a stretch to attribute the 2009 outperformance to gender, says Susan Cabrera, whose study of gender, leadership and team performance was in the December issue of Psychology of Women Quarterly.

“Having said that, research shows that women on average tend to be more risk-averse,” Cabrera says, which would give them an advantage in times when it’s best to reduce debt, cut costs and conserve cash. There may be a backlash against male CEOs who “swung for the fences and got clobbered,” she says.

Women who reach the top also have to be more exceptional than the average CEO, Cabrera says, which should show up in performance. EBay CEO John Donahoe, who replaced Meg Whitman in 2008, agrees that female executives are exceptional. But he was at eBay during Whitman’s final three years, when eBay cracked the Fortune 500 and rose to No. 326, and he says she was anything but risk-averse.

Xerox, the 147th-largest company by revenue, became the first to transition from one female CEO to another when Ursula Burns, the first female African-American CEO in the Fortune 500, followed Anne Mulcahy on July 1. Burns is the 44th woman to make it to CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

Xerox stock was up 8 percent in 2009 under the combination of Burns, 51, and Mulcahy, 57. That makes it one of the 12 companies led by a woman for the full year that enjoyed a stock rise in 2009.

Burns is a native New Yorker who grew up in a public housing project. A math whiz, she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and joined Xerox in 1980 as a summer intern.

In today’s society, if you ask a regular person on ...

In today’s society, if you ask a regular person on the street, what people look for in a model, most will say that they have to be pretty and very thin; however, there is a lot that goes into selecting which models to represent. Each agency must take into consideration trends that are occurring with businesses who hire models so these agencies can have the right models for the right businesses to hire. Below is a list of qualities that some companies look for in models which may be surprising to some:

1. Ethnicity. Depending on the client, the model’s race could be a very important factor. Some companies like to have models that have a unique, ethnic look. It also depends on who the agency’s client decides is their target audience. For example, if an agency’s client’s target audience is Asian-Americans, then the agency who hires models to represent would probably choose to hire an Asian-American model.

2. Gender. Like ethnicity, it all depends on what the agency’s client wants. For a client whose target audience is men then the agency should select male models. It would be the same for a client whose target audience is female. For example, a perfume company would usually hire only female models from the agency and a cologne company would probably just hire male models from the agency. Each agency needs to keep this mind when choosing people to represent.

3. Plus size. Agencies that hire models need to be aware of the growing demand for plus sized models for a “real” woman look. Nowadays agencies are beginning to hire more plus-sized models in response to clients’ increasing desire for them. Most companies want these types of models because they are closer to what many American women look like, so in an effort to relate to their audience, companies are hiring more and more plus-sized models, which means agencies have to start contracting more of these models.

Most people do not realize all of the effort that goes into selecting models to represent. Agencies have to know what their clients want to begin with before they even think about contracting new models. Each agency then has to decide how many models of each gender, ethnicity, and size to give contracts to before even seeing the models. Finally, the agencies can begin face-to-face interviews with the models, which is when they must try to find the people who have unique looks which also fit their clients’ wants. It can be very difficult to find the perfect model to extend a contract to with all of these factors that are involved in the decision. Modeling has been an up and coming industry, which does not show any signs of slowing down as companies begin to use all different types of models.

Gift giving does not only exist between friends and relatives. ...

Gift giving does not only exist between friends and relatives. It is also inherent amongst companies and corporations. The purpose is the same although for the latter it is made with another intention that might be explained on the business aspect on it. Corporate gifts are used as a tool to show hospitality, appreciation, or gratefulness for business colleagues, employees and clients who made part with the company. Corporate gifts are used either to foster better relationship within the company or used as initial effort to aim business contact with another.

On choosing a corporate executive gift

In choosing the corporate gift, it will all depend on who are going to receive the items. Furthermore, the gifts you are going to give should also be based on what accomplishment they must do. For example, corporate gifts may be given to employees to accomplish better work environment and encourage them to be more productive in the days to come. Moreover, it can be carried on to build business relationships to another company.

If the gift giving is made during the company’s event, items that will best commemorate the said event are the perfect presents. Add personal touch into the items by imprinting the name of the event and your employees and guests who attended the event are going to remember the affair for the longest time.

When the gift giving is intended for internal employees of the company (typically made on an annual holiday event held by the company), there are various corporate gifts that you can choose from the market. You can choose something personal that may be of use for the employees (whether for their own desks on the office or for their households). Imprinting the name of the company is optional for this occasion.

For business colleagues, there are choices of corporate executive gifts that will suit their positions in the business world. Corporate executive gifts are best given to a business colleague whether within the same company or from another company and corporation. This time, choosing the item should be done meticulously. It is also a must that the name of your company is embossed/debossed, engraved, or imprinted on the corporate gift item.

Leaving the name printed in any procedure to the items will give them the best tool to have the best recollection of your company. Imprinting, embossing, or engraving the name completely and strongly-adhered to will help them even remember you for as long as they are using the item. In addition, personalizing the items is a good way to promote your company’s services and products, albeit in an indirect way.

What are the ideal gifts for executive persons?
Because the persons who are going to receive corporate executive gifts are those who are mostly busy with their schedules, it is best to choose items that will help them with their business activities. Hence, bags of all sorts, office items, key chains, luggage tags, wine carrier bag, notebooks, or any corporate leather gifts are the best choice.

You can also consider giving them executive card, executive toy, crystal globe, glass globe, leather writing pad, bookend, shaker and martini set, glass magnifier, desk set, desk clock, wine decanter, recognition gifts, among others. There are endless items you can choose from, just make sure they are made of the finest materials that will last for a lifetime.

If you could extend your resourcefulness, find something that speaks of uniqueness. Depending on how much you are going to spend on the corporate executive gifts, you can find the most effective tool of making you remembered and be known in the industry.

Who hasn’t fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who hasn’t dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships?

Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that – dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic.

This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing.

But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher.

The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can’t do this. It’s too hard. It’s too impossible. No one can do this.

However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ And under one more, list the things that that are ‘impossible for you to do.’

Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

As of the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’

As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic.

Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard end up disappointed and disillusioned.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work and discipline. But take note that that 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one.

So dream on, friend! Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.

In the past decades, many mothers have made the decision to pursue careers, but that trend seems to be changing. Home and hobby are calling to these women, who are willing to make financial and personal sacrifices in order to be the primary caregivers for their small children. Many women have returned to being keepers at home, and hobby skills can help them meet the financial challenges of being a one income family.

One hobby that helps the mother at home is cooking. Though it could be considered work, cooking and baking are fascinating hobbies. One can explore the cuisine of different countries or learn to create gourmet treats. Baking can yield wholesome whole grain products that nourish the family for a fraction of the cost of loaves bought at the store.

Another home and hobby skill that comes in handy is sewing on a sewing machine. Many homemakers are producing quilts that are works of art. These beautiful offerings can be made inexpensively by recycling unwanted fabrics into squares and other shapes and artistically arranging the pieces. Other sewing skills that are useful for the stay-at-home-mom are mending, altering, and creating clothing. When polled about favorite pastimes, women often rank sewing at the top.
In this age, internet has become one of people needed. Internet helps people in the world to look for anything information following their jobs, skill, education an also hobby. Moms who choose producing cloths or other work art as their hobbies can use internet as marketing agent. They can still be at home doing their hobbies but at the same time they are also be a business women.

Gardening is a hobby that not only gets the participant close to nature, but also can put high quality produce on the family table. Some families are even investing in hobby greenhouses or growing enough extra to sell a bit each week at farmers’ markets. A good practical hobby like growing a garden gives a person a sense of accomplishment when they realize their efforts have created something useful and profitable.

The homemaking parent that has a sense of art can inexpensively create harmony and beauty around the house, raising everyone’s standard of living. It doesn’t have to involve spending any money. Perhaps she can arrange dried wild flowers beautifully or create simple hand-lettered wall mottoes that lift everyone’s spirits.

Yes, home and hobby call to the women of today, suggesting a simple way of life closer to those people and things that matter most. While the career women are truly making an important impact on today’s world, the quiet return of many to home and hobby may result in more impact than any of us realizes.

Like it or not, the first impression people get from ...

Like it or not, the first impression people get from you is your appearance. When engaged in an interview or you are already hired, you always want to look best. Clean cut, professional looking people get treated like a professional. How you dress sends specific signals to people. Let’s start from head to toe for women.

First of all, never wear too much jewelry or makeup. One item of jewelry is enough. A small ring on one finger, or small earrings is plenty. No big loops ladies.

Make up should be conservative, just plain powder or concealer and barely any eye make up. No lipstick is appropriate at an interview. It is just not professional.

The woman’s suit should be wool, linen, or cotton/polyester. Stick with navy, gray, and medium blues, at least for the first interview. As for blouses, solid colors and natural fabrics, such as cotton or silk look clean and professional. A scarf says a lot about a business woman; it is a powerful status symbol.

Shoes should never be open toed and stay within 2 ½ inch heels, nothing faddish or multicolored. The color of your shoe should be the same or darker than your skirt. Pantyhose should always be neutral skin tones, nothing outlandish, unless you are interviewing in the fashion industry. A briefcase is an excellent choice for a business woman, but don’t bring along your purse too. It looks awkward trying to juggle them around. You should choose either brown or burgundy, black or navy, either one is fine. You do not want to ever distract the interviewer with your outfit, makeup or accessories.

Last but definitely not least is your personal hygiene. Bad breath, dandruff, body odor, and dirty unmanicured nails do not give a good impression. When it comes to body odor, you are what you eat. If you consume a lot of garlic, onions, cilantro, and junk food, not only will it show in your skin, but it will seep through your pores. Gross. Make sure you eat a natural healthy diet so you always smell pleasant.

Contrary to expectations, not all women want to be seen ...

Contrary to expectations, not all women want to be seen with a girly pink or bejeweled phone that screams for attention. Don’t get us wrong. We love cute colors, but we also like understated tastefulness that mingles fashion and femininity in equal measures. In short, a phone good enough to be seen with. That said, design and colors aren’t the end game for us. The professional, hip and smart women of today want cell phones that also offer great functionality (as opposed to a ton of features) for not just work but also play.

So yes, give us something that works and works well. Let there be sufficient fun features for ringtones and personal pictures. How about a user interface that’s easy to text with? Finally, a handy size seems to be the operative word among our female friends who fancy unobtrusive terminals. So for the money, and based on the earlier criteria, these top 10 choices (in no particular order) make the final cut for what women want.

Lavender Castle believe that New Year’s resolutions are meant to ...

Lavender Castle believe that New Year’s resolutions are meant to be broken but it doesn’t have to be that way. The truth is that it’s important to have a plan of action in place that’s simple and easy to follow. Remember, it’s the baby steps that lead to giant results. Okay, let’s talk about these STEPS to a financially healthy new year!

Set realistic goals – unattainable goals are a surefire way to set you up for failure. I emphasize the word “realistic” as you will build your confidence when you start to see positive results.

Track your spending – this may seem tedious but it’s the only way you’ll be able to see where you precious dollars are really going. Many people like to remain vague so they don’t have to confess to the miscellaneous expenditures that are eating up their hard earned cash and preventing them from reaching their goals and dreams.

Envelope system for budgeting – this is all about getting back to basics. Create an envelope for every category within your budget and when you receive your paycheck, allocate a percentage into each category. Generations before us successfully used this system and, in my opinion, it’s still one of the most powerful ways to create and stick to a budget. Believe me, it’s empowering to know where your money’s being spent and it will allow you to make necessary adjustments over time. More so, once the cash in a particular envelope has been depleted, you know you’ve hit your spending limit. As they say, proof is in the pudding!

Progress not perfection – it’s all too tempting to set lofty, unattainable goals. Unfortunately, that usually results in taking your commitment to that goal from excitment to overwhelm and defeat. I like to remind people that any journey is more about making progress versus striving for perfection. You will find that focusing on progress will take a lot of pressure off of the task at hand. It’s also important that you have some fun and be willing to laugh as you learn!

Save before you spend – consistently allocating a portion from each paycheck into a savings account (no matter how small the amount) will go a long way to build your money confidence and give you a sense of freedom. Usually, the #1 excuse for not doing this is that there isn’t enough money from each paycheck to save. This is where the envelope and tracking systems come into play as they will both allow you to determine where you’re spending your money that you could cut back on. It doesn’t matter what amount you start with – $25, $50 per month – what matters most is that you start. As you see your savings account balance start to grow, you’ll be inspired to find ways to free up more cash to save.

Embarking on these steps requires you to make a commitment to yourself. You might also consider finding a friend who wants to take these steps with you. The best way to creating a healthy relationship with money is to connect with other like minded people who are on the same journey. Although there will be discomfort along the way, believe me, the rewards will be many!
