Scientists from Germany using retinal scanning to monitor the retinal response to a variety of contrasting colors like black and white. They found that in people who are depressed, their retinas have a lower response on the color contrast compared to people without depression.

This low response is evidence of depression patients even though they were not taking antidepressants. The more severe their depression level, the lower the retinal response to color contrast. Perhaps this is why people who are depressed see the world is not a fun place again.

Further research is needed to strengthen the study. However, if proved, retinal eye examination in the future could become a tool in diagnosis and measurement of depression severity.
